Richard Cypher's father was brutally murdered a month ago, in his home with his guts ripped out of his stomach. While coping with this sudden loss, Richard saves Kahlan Amnell from four mercenaries, and with the help of Richard's grandfather the three flee to the midlands to stop Darken Rahl's ever expanding empire.
